Sketch Map Analyser

About

Researchers have long sought to systematically study how people perceive and understand space. Sketch maps can be considered as externalization of cognitive mental maps. However, the analysis of sketch maps is still a complicated, manual process. SketchMapia is a comprehensive method to analyse sketch maps. The analysis of sketch maps is utterly complex. SketchMapia assists people to systematically analyse sketch maps in social and natural sciences.

The software helps an experimenter to analyse (i) which features the participant remember, (ii) at which level of generalisation (abstraction) did the participant recall objects, and (iii) was the participant able to recall them in the correct spatial configuration.

The Software

SketchMapia provides support to consistenly analyse sketch maps with respect to
  • completeness: based on counting the presence or absence of objects digitised in the preparatory phase;
  • the degree of generalisation: based on the seven generalization types summarised in Fig. 2.
  • the qualitative accuracy: based on the approach published in Schwering et al. 2014 (Fig. 3).
